In a pastoral letter dated January 30, 2025, Bishop Héctor A. Burgos Núñez addresses the current immigration crisis in the United States, urging clergy to embody Christ’s love by welcoming migrants, immigrants, and refugees. He emphasizes the biblical mandate to “welcome the stranger” (Matthew 25:35) and highlights the United Methodist Church’s Social Principles, which affirm the dignity and rights of displaced individuals. Bishop Burgos Núñez calls upon congregations to provide tangible support, such as assistance with navigating immigration policies and securing essential needs like food, housing, and employment. He also denounces laws and policies that criminalize or dehumanize displaced persons and opposes the separation of families and the use of for-profit detention centers. The bishop concludes by encouraging prayer and active hospitality, reminding the faithful that in welcoming these individuals, they are welcoming Jesus himself.
