April 19, 2005 we tied our first prayer quilt. The recipient was a child faced with a disease that would require years of doctor care. As I look back I am reminded how the Prayer Quilt ministry began in 1992 at Hope Methodist church in Hope, California. A few ladies started an informal quilting group with no other purpose than to have fun making quilts together. One of the members in the group had a two year old grandson named Kody. Kody had heart surgery and fell into a coma. The doctors were very pessimistic about his recovery. The ladies decided to make a quilt of vivid colors and tie their silent prayers into the quilt in the form of knots. The quilt was rushed to the hospital and was laid over him while still in a coma. Before Kody was awake he began touching and fingering the knots. The quilt became an important part of Kody’s recovery. The doctor wrote on his medical chart that the quilt was not to leave his side. Parents of other sick children were asking for quilts for their little ones and the Prayers & Squares Ministry was born.
Prayer & Squares has three commandments we uphold.
Our April 25, workshop will focus on how we make our prayer quilts. We will also have a quilt show and tell sharing. It’s always fun to share.
Come and join the fellowship in celebrating 20 years of love and kindness to others in need of our prayers.
We are all angels with just one wing; only by embracing can we fly.
